A massive blaze engulfed a warehouse at a steel plant near Tokyo’s Haneda airport, Sunday, leaving thick plumes of smoke which could be seen for miles.
Firefighters in Tokyo responded about 11:36 a.m. local time Monday, August 23, 2015 to a steel pipe-making warehouse owned by a unit of steelmaker Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal.
The steel plant fire located about 1 kilometer from Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport) occurred after a blast at a warehouse at a US military post near Tokyo. The blast sent sparks into the sky and caused a blaze that may have extended to the steel plant. Immediately after the fire was reported an investigation began to determine whether the steel plant fire was caused by the explosion at the military post.
