Lake County boy, 6, becomes honorary firefighter in Eustis, Florida.
Cameron Witsman, age 6, of Lake County with a passion for firefighting got to be a firefighter Friday in the City of Eustis. “He was born with a condition known as congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation,” according to his mother, Caroline Witsman.
On the day after his birthday, Eustis Fire Chief Rex Wims wanted to do something special for him. First cameron took a written exam, which was read to him by his mother’s boyfriend, firefighter Jason Pepper. Cameron aced the written test and then suited up for the practical test. He showed his skills by knocking down cones with a hose and by dragging a training dummy to safety.
“He’s a very special little man. He loves the fire department. He dreams about the fire department. All he thinks about is the fire department. We wanted him to become an honorary firefighter.”

The life-threatening lung condition forced him to spend months in the hospital, and endure a bi-lateral lung transplant. His ongoing treatment includes a routine of daily pills and monthly hospital visits. One of his medications lowers his immune system, so he can’t be around germs or sick people, and he must be home schooled.
