New York City police and firefighters responded on December 20, 2014 about 2:47 p.m. to Myrtle Avenue and Tompkins Avenue in Brooklyn after two NYPD police officers were executed while they sat in their police car. Their police car was parked southbound on Tompkins Avenue, just north of Myrtle Avenue near Mike’s Pizza. The police officer in the driver’s seat was brought to the street. NYPD police officers and FDNY paramedics worked with extreme speed to try to save the two police officers with CPR on the street, and then rushed both police officers to nearby Woodhull Hospital, where both police officers were pronounced dead.
The two murdered officers were identified as Rafael Ramos, aged 40, and Wenjian Liu, aged 32.
The suspect Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley was pursued by two witnesses, and then police officers closed in on him after chasing him onto the subway, where he committed suicide.
