UPDATE: Akayed Ullah, age 27, an immigrant from Bangladesh who lived in Brooklyn, is in police custody. He is accused of setting off a pipe bomb strapped to his body during the morning rush hour on Monday. The explosion, which may have detonated prematurely, was located underground inside one of Manhattan’s busiest commuter corridors.
According to NYPD, the explosion, captured on video, occurred at 7:20 a.m. ET in a pedestrian walkway connecting the Eighth Avenue, Seventh Avenue and Broadway bus lines.
Ullah had attached the pipe bomb to himself with a “combination of Velcro and zip ties,” according to James P. O’Neill, the commissioner of the New York Police Department. Analysts suspect the secure fastening that was applied may have indicated Ullah entered the subway intending to carry out a suicide bombing.
During a police press conference a picture of Mr. Ullah was displayed that appeared to have been taken inside the subway walkway after the blast. On the subway floor, Ullah was curled in a fetal position with torn clothing, and his exposed abdominal skin and clothing blackened.
The bomber suffered serious lacerations and burns to his abdomen and hands.
