Lake Bluff and Lake Forest firefighters responded about 12:14 p.m. Sunday to a report of a coach bus on fire on Route 41 near Rockland Road. Firefighters reported seeing a header further south on Route 41 closer to Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital.
Firefighters on arrival reported a fully-involved bus fire just north of the north entrance to Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital.
New York Times Travel Columnist Lucas Peterson for The Frugal Traveler was onboard and apparently safely evacuated. He gave the following account of the bus fire incident on Twitter. He reported that one hour into his trip on a Megabus, the bus was turning around to “switch buses.” Thirteen minutes later he reported that his bus was on fire. Six minutes later he reported that the bus exploded. Peterson included a series of photos that appeared to be from a safe and evacuated position away from the bus.
Peterson also reported that police on the scene reported nobody was injured. Air temperature was 38 degrees with a North wind at 13 mph at 12:55 p.m. at Chicago Waukegan Regional Airport.
