Salem firefighters responded about 10:00 p.m. Wednesday to a three-story warehouse fire that also ignited a home at 521 South Pearl. Firefighters initially attacked the blaze on Pearl as the factory/warehouse fire burned out of control and extended to the entire building — 350×45 square-foot factory warehouse building.
The fire caused a nearby power transformer to explode. Firefighters had the power company cut power to the factory, which also caused a power outage to large area of the north and west side of Salem.
Also on scene were firefighters from Odin, Mt. Vernon City, Centralia City, Kinmundy-Alma, Odin, Iuka, and Kell.
Additional emergency agencies on scene were Marion County Civil Defense, Salem Emergency Management Agency, and Salem Police and the Marion County Sheriff.
Three more buildings were burned in downtown Salem Friday morning, which has officials suspecting the fires are the work of an arsonist.
