Chicago Fire Department 3-11 alarm in a large vacant mixed commercial/residential building with 2 snorkels, 2 tower ladders, new turret wagon plus numerous other streams.
Chicago Fire Department Engine 84 arrived first on the scene about 10:40 a.m. Wednesday August 27, 2014 and reported smoke showing inside the building at 6310 South Halsted Avenue. The affected building was a three-story building with commercial space on the first floor and apartments above. The fire was reported in the basement.
Battalion Chief 18 on arrival reported a fire in a building 200 x 100 with companies cutting a hole in the floor to find the seat of the fire.
A Still and Box was declared at about 10:51 p.m.
Deputy District Chief 2-1-23 took command at about 11:16 p.m.
A high expansion foam unit CFD 6-3-1 responded about 11:17 p.m.
Initially there were two master streams going and two master streams being set up on the defensive operation as the fire breached the basement to the first floor at about 11:25 p.m.
The alarm was raised to a 2-11 at about 11:13 p.m.
The alarm was raised to a 3-11 at about 11:37 p.m., and portable deluge gun 6-7-6 was dispatched to the scene.
A spare snorkel truck — Reserve Snorkel 6-6-1 — was dispatched to the 2-11 at about 11:37 p.m.
Hose wagon 6-1-2 was dispatched at about 12:26 a.m.
Seven master streams and three handlines were in operation at 1:58 a.m.
The alarm was struck out at 3:07 a.m. on orders of 2-1-30.
Firefighters continued to work on the ruins throughout the day Thursday and into the evening.
