Authorities say three people have minor injuries after a small plane hit an apartment building near Washington, DC. More than a dozen people had to evacuate the building.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to a plane crash into an apartment building just after 12:30 a.m. Friday near Astoria Circle and Rock Hill Road in Herndon, Virginia.
A Cessna 177B Cardinal began experiencing electrical problems while low on fuel about 12:30 a.m. The aircraft crashed into the roof an apartment building where four adults and two children were sleeping.
When the family walked out of their bedrooms, they found two people and a single engine aircraft in their living room. Two people in the apartment unit were injured and the two people aboard the aircraft were injured. The pilot, William Larson, 61, of Vienna suffered serious injuries and was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital. A 33-year-old female resident of the apartment was also transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital. A passenger of the aircraft was treated at the scene and released.
The crash scene is located just east of Washington Dulles International Airport, and northwest of Washington DC; Arlington, Virginia; and Alexandria, Virginia.
Both people onboard the Cessna 177B work for Vienna-based Aerial Photographers, LLC. They were taking infrared photographs before the crash occur.
The NTSB and FAA are investigating the crash.
